In so doing, he demonstrates that he is interested in depicting the entirety of the human experience, from birth through to death.

Thus Lawrence not only kills off his first protagonist, but spares no detail in the process. When he drowns, his body is “washed along in the black, swirling darkness, passively” (229). Lawrence describes how Tom “wrestled and fought to get himself free, in the unutterable struggle of suffocation, but he always fell again deeper” (229). The scene is described in vivid and upsetting detail. Tom’s DrowningĪt almost the exact midpoint of the novel, Tom drowns when the banks of the canal running through Marsh Farm collapse during a heavy rain. This picturesque imagery functions so as to contrast against the “dirty industrial town” in which the Brangwens live at the end of the novel, and to illustrate the landscape that was lost during the Industrial Revolution. The landscape is quaint and idyllic, with a hilltop church-tower rising in the distance. 'synopsis' may belong to another edition of this title.The novel begins with an extended description of the Brangwens Marsh Farm which is “in the meadows where the Erewash twisted sluggishly through alder trees” (9). At the Villa Mirenda, near Florence, he finished “Lady Chatterley´s Lover” (1928), his last novel and the one that was to cause more furore than any other. His next novel, “The Rainbow” (1915), was seized by the police and declared obscene. His first major novel, “Sons and Lovers” (1913) is a faithful autobiographical account of these early years. He taught for two years at an elementary school in Croydon but after the death of his mother he became seriously ill and was advised to give up teaching. He was already writing poetry and short stories and he now began his first novel “The White Peacock” (1911), which was followed by “The Trespasser” (1912). In 1906, having worked to save the necessary, he took up a scholarship at Nottingham University College to study for a teacher´s certificate. He attended Nottingham High School for three years, but at 15 was forced to give up his education and take a job for a short time as a clerk in a surgical goods factory and then became a pupil teacher.

He was often ill as a child and grew up in considerable poverty. David Herbert LAWRENCE (1885-1930), was born at Eastwood, Nottinghamshire, one of five children of a miner and an ex-schoolteacher.
